How to join the SfEP
Who can join the SfEP?
The SfEP is a professional society for employed and self-employed copy-editors and proofreaders. Desk editors, project managers and other editorial professionals are also encouraged to join.
The Society exists to promote high standards in all published material. We therefore also welcome as corporate associates all publishing houses and other businesses and organizations that use the services of editorial professionals.
Will I be an associate or a member?
All new entrants to the SfEP join as associates. Individual associates with relevant qualifications and experience may then apply for ordinary or advanced membership (see below).
See membership structure for more information.
How much does it cost to join?
Everyone joining the SfEP pays the annual associate subscription of £90, plus a processing fee:
Individual associates joining between 1 September 2009 and 28 February 2010 will pay a half-year subscription of £45, plus the processing fee.
The processing fee is waived for students. To apply as a student, contact the SfEP Office and ask for a student application form to be sent to you.
For more information on subscriptions, including those for corporate associates, see Annual SfEP subscriptions.
NB: All subscriptions are non-refundable.
How do I apply to join?
If you're interested in joining the SfEP, please download an application form, complete it and send it, with the appropriate processing fee and subscription, to the SfEP Office. NB: Students should send only an application form and subscription.
How can I upgrade my status from associate?
If you're joining and already have some training and experience in copy-editing and proofreading, you may be eligible to upgrade from being an associate to become a member. If you believe that you would be eligible for either ordinary or advanced membership, tick the relevant box on the application form and we will send you an ordinary or an advanced membership application form with your membership pack.
If you're an existing associate or ordinary member and wish to upgrade to ordinary or advanced membership, you can request the appropriate form from the SfEP Office at any time. The comprehensive Ordinary and advanced membership: notes for applicants (157 KB pdf) will tell you exactly what is required and what you have to do.
All applicants for an upgrade must pay a standard fee of £35.
If you're currently an associate and you upgrade to ordinary or advanced membership, you'll qualify for a half-price entry in the SfEP Directory of Editorial Services.
