Which course?

Are you a complete novice?

For people with no publishing background or contacts, Proofreading 1: Introduction and Copy-editing 1: Introduction will give you the opportunity to find out what proofreading or copy-editing for publishers is about, to test whether you have the necessary aptitude before investing in any further training and to ask our tutors for advice.

We also recommend the Publishing Training Centre's distance learning courses: Basic proofreading by Gillian Clarke and Copy-editing by Barbara Horn. These courses allow you to learn at your own pace, and the course texts are good reference books.

Level of SfEP courses

The table below lists the courses provided by SfEP and gives an indication of whether it is suitable for somebody just starting out on a career of proofreading or editing (or indeed wants to find out if it is a suitable career for them), somebody who already has a knowledge of the basics (or perhaps has taken a career break and wants to brush up their knowledge before starting out again), or somebody who is experienced but wants to maintain or extend their level of knowledge.

Notes

* Passing Proofreading 2: Progress is a requirement for acceptance on to mentored proofreading.

** Passing Copy-editing 2: Progress is a requirement for acceptance on to mentored copy-editing.

An example of how you might use this suite of courses might be:

Proofreading 1 > PTC Basic Proofreading by distance learning > Proofreading 2 > Proofreading 3.

There is no set pathway for these courses: everyone has different needs. Some people are starting a new career, others will already be quite experienced and might want to skip the basics. Contact the SfEP office on 020 8785 6155 if you would like some advice on what course would be best for you.
